Bed Bugs Hitching Rides Home from Spring Travel

Spring travel season brings increased risk of bed bug infestations in the greater Philadelphia area.

Spring travel is ramping up across the Greater Philadelphia region. As a result, pest control professionals are warning homeowners about a hidden and persistent threat: bed bugs. Hoffman’s Exterminating is advising residents to stay alert this time of year, as increased travel often leads to a rise in bed bug infestations throughout local communities.

According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), bed bugs are highly skilled hitchhikers that can cling to luggage, clothing, and personal belongings. Once introduced into a home, they can quickly spread by hiding in mattresses, box springs, furniture, and even behind walls. Because they are small and nocturnal, infestations often go unnoticed until they become more severe.

“Spring break trips, weekend getaways, and business travel all contribute to seasonal spikes in bed bug activity,” says William T. Hoffman, President & CEO of Hoffman’s Exterminating. “Hotels, airports, and public transportation hubs can all serve as transfer points, allowing these pests to move easily from one location to another. Unfortunately, even clean and well-maintained accommodations are not immune.”

How To Prevent Bed Bug Infestations

Hoffman recommends that travelers take precautions such as inspecting hotel mattress seams and headboards, keeping luggage elevated off the floor, and storing clothing in sealed bags when possible. Upon returning home, washing and drying clothes on high heat and vacuuming luggage can help reduce the risk of bringing bed bugs inside.

If signs of bed bugs appear—such as small bites, dark spotting on bedding, or visible insects—prompt action is essential. DIY treatments are often ineffective, as bed bugs can hide in hard-to-reach areas and reproduce quickly.

Homeowners who suspect a bed bug issue should contact Hoffman’s Exterminating. Request a professional inspection and customized treatment plan to eliminate infestations safely and thoroughly.
