December 2023 – As the season of holiday cheer commences, families across the nation are preparing for a busy month of socially distanced gatherings and virtual celebrations. While it’s easy to get distracted by the hustle and bustle of the holidays, Hoffman’s Exterminating, a New Jersey pest control company, in partnership with the National Pest Management Association, is reminding homeowners to stay alert for pests, especially as they begin decorating for the holidays.
“Homes are especially prone to infestations this time of year as homeowners bring fresh greenery indoors to decorate for the holidays,” said William T. Hoffman, President & CEO of Hoffman’s Exterminating. “Many aren’t aware that wreaths, garlands, trees and other greenery can carry pests like spiders, mites and ticks right into the home. If homeowners aren’t careful, an infestation can quickly get out of hand.”
To help keep your holiday season pest-free this year, Hoffman’s Exterminating and the NPMA recommend the following top tips to avoid any unwanted visitors:
- Shake out fresh greenery to ensure you’re not inadvertently inviting pests into your home. It’s possible that pests may have laid eggs in your greenery, which could cause a major infestation if not removed before being brought indoors.
- Before unpacking boxes of decorations that have been stored away since last December, bring them outdoors and inspect them for signs of a pest infestation such as gnaw marks or droppings. When it’s time to pack up those decorations again, be sure to store them in sturdy, plastic containers with sealable lids to prevent pests from gaining access.
- Everyone enjoys cozying up next to a fire, including pests! Inspect firewood for signs of spiders, termites or ants before bringing it indoors. Any firewood stored outdoors should also be placed at least five feet off the ground and 20 feet from the home.
“If you do suspect an infestation, it’s best to call a professional to ensure the job is done thoroughly.” adds William T. Hoffman. “Give us a call today at 888-463-3628 for assistance!”
