Ant Invasions Surge with Spring Weather

Rising temperatures trigger ant infestations across the greater Philadelphia area.

With warmer temperatures and increased rainfall, spring marks the beginning of peak ant activity in the Philadelphia area, including South Jersey and Delaware. Hoffman’s Exterminating is seeing a noticeable uptick in calls related to ant infestations, as these pests emerge in large numbers and begin searching for food and water inside homes.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) notes that ants are among the most common household pests in the United States, with certain species capable of contaminating food and even causing structural damage. Carpenter ants, in particular, can tunnel through wood, potentially weakening structural components over time if left untreated.

“Spring rains often force ants out of their nests, driving them indoors through even the smallest openings,” said William T. Hoffman, President & CEO of Hoffman’s Exterminating. “Cracks in foundations, gaps around windows and doors, and utility entry points can all serve as entryways. Once inside, ants are typically found in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where moisture and food sources are readily available.”

Homeowners may first notice small trails of ants along countertops, baseboards, or sinks. These trails often lead back to a larger colony hidden within walls, beneath floors, or outside near the foundation. Because colonies can contain thousands of ants, infestations can escalate quickly without proper treatment.

How To Address Spring Ant Infestations

While store-bought sprays and baits may seem like a quick fix, they often fail to eliminate the entire colony. In many cases, these treatments only address visible ants, leaving the source of the infestation intact and allowing the problem to persist or return.

Hoffman’s Exterminating recommends proactive measures such as sealing entry points, keeping surfaces clean, storing food in airtight containers, and addressing moisture issues like leaks or standing water. Routine home maintenance, including trimming vegetation away from the home and inspecting foundations, can also help reduce the likelihood of ant invasions.
