Stinging Insects Begin Nesting in Spring

Wasps and hornets are likely to start building nests across Philadelphia area this spring.

With the arrival of warmer weather, stinging insects such as wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets are beginning to establish nests throughout the Philadelphia area. Hoffman’s Exterminating is encouraging homeowners to act early, as addressing nests in the spring can prevent larger and more dangerous infestations later in the season.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reports that stinging insect activity increases significantly during the spring and summer months, particularly following mild winters and wet spring conditions. Early nests are typically small and may go unnoticed, but they can grow rapidly as colonies expand and worker populations increase.

Common nesting locations include roof eaves, decks, sheds, trees, and even inside wall voids or attics. In many cases, homeowners may not realize a nest is present until insect activity becomes more noticeable. By that time, the colony may already be well established.

“As nests grow larger, stinging insects become more territorial and aggressive, especially when they perceive a threat,” says William T. Hoffman, President & CEO of Hoffman’s Exterminating. “Accidental disturbances—such as mowing the lawn near a hidden nest or attempting removal without proper protection—can quickly lead to multiple stings. For individuals with allergies, these encounters can pose serious health risks.”

Another concern is that certain species, such as yellowjackets, are known to build nests underground, making them harder to detect and more dangerous to approach. Increased activity around specific areas of the yard may be the only early warning sign.

How To Protect Your Property From Stinging Insects

Hoffman’s Exterminating recommends routine inspections of your property during the spring, paying close attention to eaves, corners, and shaded areas where nests are commonly built. Addressing nests early, when they are still small, is the safest and most effective way to prevent escalation.
